OK! Here's a new idea I had! In this thread, I will frequently post the name of a band and a song, and you will all go and download it in whatever way you can (I use Kazaa, but it's up to you, official band websites are safer if possible). Then you give it a few listens until you are familiar with it, then come back here and write up on it. 1. Rate the song, out of 5, 10, 100, 37, whatever. Just don't give half marks, that pisses me off!! 2. Comment on the song, the lyrics, the tune, the message. 3. Comment on the band. If you already knew of them give your opinion based on what you've heard, if they're new to you then tell us what you think based on your first impressions, vocals, style, etc. This will probably be mostly punk and ska as that's mostly what I listen to but I'll try and get a bit of variety. All right, so for the first song I've chosen a band I've been listening to a lot this weekend. I went on a 5 hour train journey and stupidly left all my MiniDiscs at home, except the one which happened to be in my MD player at the time, which had The Distillers on it, and this band... Misfits - HelenaOh yes, make sure you don't accidentally download the second version, cunningly titled 'Helena 2'. I haven't heard this version so I don't know how different it is. It opens with the truly superb lyrics which totally sums up the Misfits' horror-themed rock style: "If I cut off your arms and cut off your legs, would you still love me anyway?" Enjoy.

Ah good old misfits.. you can't god wrong with new jersey punk rock.. well usually.. I love the Misfits, (Actually a stupid little fact about them is that they're from a nearby town.. I knew a girl that lives either in or by house were they would hang out at when they were in high school). anyway though I haven't heard that song, I sure its just as good as there others.
ANd I like this idea, Kamau. Maybe you sometimes let other's posts songs and such.. I can think of a few bands, like Tad and Lost Goat. but whatever..

Meh. I've got better connections to a more popular (not better, but more popular) band. My cousin's best friend is sister to a close friend of some guy in NFG.
So NYA! And yeah, my bro gets tons of stuff through this connection.
Writing this while listening . . .
0:05.9 - Nice beat 0:14.3 - Lyrics pop in 0:29.6 - The voices are beginning to piss me off. 0:56.2 - This sounds like emo with decent music. 1:04.4 - Turning into upbeat rock? 1:22.3 - Enough already. Lyrics again! Ugh can't believe I just said that. 1:31.8 - Sounding better than before. 1:45.0 - Screeching sucks, d**nit. 2:09.6 - A concurrent beat/theme? WHOA didn't expect something so complex from what I heard so far in the song. 2:34.9 - If it weren't for the fact that I knew it is 3:20.1 long, I woulda thought it was over. Dramatic pause for how f**king long? 2:52.8 - The theme is back . . . 3:10.2 - Sloooowwwww mmmmmmoooooooo 3:17.0 - Why does the mp3 go for another 3 seconds? There's no ringing sound, everything just stops. That's wasted filespace, ya bastards. What if I were using the good ol' 950mb hd from my PS/2? Yeah, that woulda pissed me off BIG TIME.
Edit - Forgot the grade . . . Uhhh . . .
B.5?
Edit 2 - I take that back. 72.B is better.

OK come on people do it do it.
This next song is off the recently-released third Distillers album 'Coral Fang'. Personally I love this song and I think it's one of the best ones they've written.
I think it's a very personal song, both to me and of course to Brody Dalle, the song-writer and singer. For those who don't know, she used to be married to Tim Armstrong (guitarist and vocalist of Rancid) but they divorced a few months ago. This happened about the same time I split up with my girlfriend, and the lyrics really sum up my feelings about her.
But aside from the emotional attachment I have, I really like the song itself. It's hard but still melodic, and Brody's voice in the quiet echoey bit is simply beautiful. Kinda reminds me of Debbie Harry.
So, the song is:
The Distillers - Beat Your Heart Out
Umm well after posting this I decided to just put a little extract of some of the lyrics...
Let alone to rust alone, you’re making me. I had to run, the damage is done. I give it up, I give it up. There's nothing left, so take the rest. You’re draining me. I set it light, it burns so bright. Stab it out, stab it out.
Baby you make my heart beat faster.
I had to run the damage is done. I give it up, I give it up. I had to go, it got control. You’re breaking me. There's nothing left, so take the rest. You’re draining me. I set it light, it burns so bright. Stab it out, stab it out.
