Uhhuh. Tonight is one of the last nights of Chanukka. Practically all that I've gotten is my brother's roommate's Devil May Cry, from my brother of course. ;D
Anywho . . . So I come home from basketball practice, and find a gift; A RAM upgrade. WOOHOO!, I thought.
When I opened the package, I noticed something odd . . . There were four . . . Yes, count em, FOUR of those little security devices on the package . . . Yes, this is odd.
Normally, there is one. Even then, I would think that this is a moronic thing to do . . . Putting a magnet on a computer chip, which essentially has the potential to fry it.
Two on the inside, two on the outside.
So I take the chip out of the package, examine the devices to make sure that they're those little security magnets, and install the RAM.
After having a bit of trouble with my monitor *shakes fist at monitor* , I finally got my computer up.
This is what showed when I checked on my system information:
RAM: 255Mb
Now . . . I already had a 256Mb chip in there. And I had just added another one, an upgrade from my 128Mb chip.
I restarted.
RAM: 255Mb
Now, I tested the original chip alone; It was fine. Then, I tested the new chip - My computer spat a bunch of errors at me.
I called tech support . . . And their guess? That the chip was fried by the security devices . . . Which was exactly what I was thinking about.
So . . . When the computer stores say that they have personel that know what they're doing . . . Do you believe them, or believe that they're morons?

I bought a 56k modem a while back, and it was screwed too. Apparently it functioned by sucking up ram which was causing hardware conflicts. It reduced our color capacity to 16 colors at most, and limited the computer resolution to 640x680 pixels max. It was annoying. We had to uninstall the modem, and run a program in the BiOS which restored our computer to exactly how it was at a pervious day in the week. I'll tell you right now it was a nightmare fixing our computer. At least your problem wasn't as bad as mine.
