Same here: it could have lived on just OTT action sequences alone, but even these were few and far between, and they just didn't seem exciting. Pretty boring.

-Possible spoilers?-
It could have been so good too... No swords, no magic. To me... and maybe I'm wrong, but to me it seemed like a big ripoff of FF8 and 7. Zeus Canon= Sister Ray. Gaia= Lifestream,.... evil... dude = Seifer, at least in looks (blonde hair and tan trench to black hair and black trench). Alien things from asteroid= evil stuff from moon in ff8. In other words: if it weren't for the stunning visuals, the movie would be a complete waste of time.
-End-

Now, if the movie was based on one of the games (FF7 would probably be a good choice, but in a trilogy) using the expensive animation they used (Aki Ross' hair was a breakthrough, it cost about 20 thousand to make) in would have be A LOT better.

Yeah. Let me put it like this: They called it Final Fantasy but they sure as hell didn't make one. It features the actual Earth, with New York and Frisco and everything. Let's not call it FF but just Spirits Within. It doesn't diserve the name Final Fantasy.

Oh, well if you're family thinks its a good movie, thats a whole different story. Spirits Within forever... woo. On a serious note: You're actually kind of right about the Squaresoft thing CGoku, but that doesnt mean we have to like it. Fans have a very special skill called "pretend" where we magically wish away things we don't like. For example: the movie Battlefield Earth never was, Jar Jar Binks is a figment of your imagination , and finally the Zelda CD-I s? What are those?

So true. I don't think using modern Earth was a good idea. I'm dead-set against that. Hey, the technology was pretty cool. If they'd put it on a planet LIKE Earth, not had such a bad ending and had some traditional Final Fantasy stuff like a guy with a sword and magic, I'd be happier.

*Runs into walls repeatedly, and whacks his head with a stick to provoke brain damage...* I'm sure you would too if you'd played 'em.
If they made it a game first, i'm sure you people would have loved it.
It was actually written by the guy who writes the game plots I think, and that could be why it wasn't very exciting: it was like a game that you couldn't play, or a feature-length FMV. It would probably have been better as a game, like you said.

Bah, it is so obvious why Squaresoft called it "Final Fantasy". It's because people love Final Fantasy, and they thought many gamers would go and see it, expecting a Final Fantasy. But Squaresoft did not understand the disappointment they have caused. They were only thinking about the $MoneY$.
