Ok, you may not agree that these games are worthy of being deemed 'classic' but they are very good nonetheless. My memory is a little hazy on these two as it has been a while. Which one do you think is better? I will try to compare the two:
Gameplay:
Star Ocean: Fun, fast, and exciting. Gameplay is different then in most RPGs in which it is not turn based, you can run around. I find it to be quite challenging at times as well unless you level up waaay to much. (I'm not sure but I believe highest possible level is around 180?) Sometimes the battles can be very frustrating, however. There is a system where you can raise your combat and mental abilities. This system is the reason I give this a 9 instead of an 8. 9/10.
Valkyrie Profile: You press certain buttons in order to attack. You can string together sweet combos. There is a system similiar to Star Ocean where you can raise your abilities. It is important to raise these abilities not only for combat purposes but because you must send a couple of warriors to Odin that must have acquired specific abilities in order to get good items and money. The challenge varies as you can choose it at the beginning. When moving around in 2d, there are many things you must do. For one, to get to higher places you have to shoot crystals and then jump on them before they break. I won't go into detail as there is plenty more. 9.5/10
Story:
Star Ocean: Not much new here. You have to save the world blah blah. The characters are likable for the most part but some you just want dead. There are some neat enemies though. 7/10
Valkyrie Profile: A fairly innovative story that relates to the battle of Ragnarok. Each character has their own little story as well. Valkyrie is a cool character and so are many of the others. In order to find out more about characters you must meet certain conditions and that can be difficult at times. 8/10.
Music:
Star Ocean: Probably the best part of this game. The music fits the mood excellently and is well done. The awful and annoying battle sounds bring this score down. 9/10.
Valkyrie Profile: Some very excellent and memorable songs but unfortunately there is a lack of songs and the same song is repeated often. 8/10.
Graphics:
Star Ocean: Luscious, 3d graphics and artwork. Great use of colours to create an excellent fantasy world. A little outdated by the end of the PSX reign. 8.5/10.
Valkyrie Profile: Although in 2d, the background art work is excellent. Still, you can't help but think that Enix was just too lazy to make this into 3d. (Not that the 2d idea wasn't bad) 8/10.
As you can see, these two games are very close but in the end I give Star Ocean 8.5/10 and Valkyrie Profile a 9/10 for it's amazing gameplay. Which do you guys think is better?
