In RPG's, the Remakes are better, but I'd still go with Originals because RPG's are about story not GFX and I don't see the point in getting new GFX. Waste of money. Sequels just suck.
In other game genres, Sequels are better than remakes. But I'll only get them if the sequels are actually different to the old. Like UT and UT2003, not worth the money to get 2003.
Stick to originals.

If you go with the attitude that something sucks it will suck wether or not it's even good to begin with.
I go with whatever the company decides to do. Video games should not be made into Hollywood like some of you people are trying to do .. If it's fun, I play it. If it's not, I avoid it, and hope someone else can find fun in it. That's it.
But to honestly answer the question, I'd rather have a sequel then a remake because I like something "new" to play.

Neither: a remake or a sequel always has the chance of being inferior in gameplay, with only graphics souped up. I prefer a new idea every time.

Would new installments in a series like Final Fantasy be considered sequels?

Depends...in older RPGs I tend to enjoy the originals better. RPGs like Baldur's Gate 2 and Suikoden 3 always seem to get better with sequels.
Xenogears could DEFINATELY use a remake!! They rushed the production, and shortchanged themselves ( and us) gameplay and plot-wise. If you've played the 2nd CD of Xenogears you know what I mean. The storyline was incomparable...up until that CD change. I felt gipped.
