I never understood this. Dungeons are supposed to be basements where prinsoners were kept in medivel times. But most "dungeons" in RPGs don't have prisoners in them, and not that many of them are underground. Bosses are supposed to be people with authority over other people. However, most (or many) "bosses" in RPG games are just monsters that live in dungeons and have no authority over any other monsters or anything. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

I beleive it stems from the early table top rpgs like D and D first edition. The name includeds 'dungeons' in the literal sense, but probably took on a different meaning as fanbase expanded. As best I could figure why, I think their just colloquial terms that early RPers used to describe the places. Kinda like language, the terms may have changed over time as well to form current usage.

well by the law of power the strongest monster in the dungeon (or cave or such) is the Boss of that area (call it Alpha monster, overlord whatever) and many d&D games do feature prison breaks and fighting the Boss of whatever. its just the RP slang

In my first RPG years, I called them masters instead of bosses.

Same thing, Danel. Person with Authority over others.

So what do you want me to call them? "Ok.. it's a very-strong-monster battle!" or "It's a very-big-monster battle!""

When people write walkthroughs, you want them to write:
Items: Potion, Antidote Monsters: Gollum, Titan Thougher Battles: Spirit Master ?
