We see plenty of plots around here. However, not all of them are top-notch. Here's my solution. I'm going to give some suggestions, and hopefully, some newbies will tune in. Keep in mind it's not just newbies that make bad plots. ANYONE can regurgiate the same trashy story over and over again.
I notice a lot of times that a programmer chooses custom systems over story substance. While there are notable exceptions, something with a CBS, custom menu, and an FF rip off plot are all too common.
Personally, even if RTP is used, I like a good story with default systems over a bad story with custom systems. A Blurred Line is a perfect example of this. While the graphics were mainly RTP, the story was good. Since it was sci-fi, as opposed to the normal fantasy, made me like it even more.
Here's some suggestion plots. If anyone wants to use them for a game, just say so and mention little old me in the credits under 'story' or some such.
-The Business End- Unlike other RPGs, here's one set in a parallel version of Earth. It takes place in the year 2000, but with a different geo-political setting.
After the end of WWII, Stalin is assassinated. A democratic government takes power in Russia, and is an ally of America and Western Europe. Since there's no Soviet Union, the Chinese Communists lose power, and the Nationalists retain control.
The Cold War is averted, and technology prospers. Atomic power, space flight, and robotics make quantum leaps in technology. America, Europe, Russia, and several Asian countries (namely Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and China) unite into the FDS. (Federation of Democratic States)
A relative peace comes across the world, until terrorism rears its ugly head. Hailing from the imaginary country of the Iranistan, terrorists with advanced weapons show up. The weapons, however, are far beyond FDS technology. The appearence of such weapons causes a blame-game among the factions in the FDS. However, a lone group must cut aside the propaganda to see the truth.
-Sleeping In-
A futuristic world, simply called the Homeworld, begins colonizing another planet, Neo Terra. There is a report of terror attacks on Neo Terra's colonies, and a squad from Homeworld is called in to find who's responsible.
However, a terror attack messes up their ship's computer. The crew crash lands, and their ship is lost. The crew remains in stasis within the ship for an unknown amount of time. Eventually, even back up power runs out, and the crew's survivors awaken.
They find they are on Neo-Terra, but they've been asleep for a long time. So long, in fact, the terraforming is done. Also, advanced civilization is a memory. Primitivism seems to have gripped the Neo Terrans for some reason, and technology is a lost art.
The crew finds a unique chance. Will they use their technicial knowledge to start a renaissance and find out why civilization crashed to the Dark Ages? Or will they use their knowledge to build weapons to conquer the primitive planet?
-Culture Clash- My attempt to pregnant dog-slap Tolkien wannabe Anglo-fantasy. Three factions. New races. No mercy.
The Alchemist Guild, a proto-corporation that combines da Vinci-type machines with magic, needs natural resources. Their machines require maintaince, and those resources can be found...on territory owned by the Preservers, a group of druidic radicals. The Honor Keepers, a brutal theocracy, watches on, and hopes the Guild and Preservers will tear each other apart. If not, they're prepared to step in.
There's a few new races-
Lingerers- Alchemist Guild humans with longer lives. They 'linger' around, hence the name.
Sneaks- A race of pointed eared, tall, slender individualists. Don't trust one, especially if money's involved.
Gearlings- A short race of sadistic inventors, who enjoy creating new, agonzing weapons. They sometimes crawl into machines to fix them.
Channelers- A race of short, bearded mages that despise going underground. They channel magic, hence the name.
Stevedores- A halfbreed of Sneak and Lingerer. Tall, strong, and cunning. However, not the brightest, nor the dumbest.
That's my 2 cents. Any thoughts/flames/comments?
