Shiguru Wazzat is reviewing One By One, by the Foo Fighters
As I did with my Red Hot Chili Peppers review, I'll review this album song by song, with a finalconclusion at the end. I should also say, I am reviewing this from the perspective of a Foo Fighters fan and a rock music fan, so this may be slightly biased, though I will try to make it as even as possible.
All My Life
This was the first single off the album. All my life is a great rock song, It begins slowly and quietly and explodes into huge verses and choruses, both screams of excellence. This is possibly the best song on the album.
9/10
Low
This song is beautifully well done. The first time I listened to Low I was tired, it was late at night and I was trying to sleep. When the double voice effect comes into play in some parts of the chorus, I immeadiatly opened my eyes and felt pretty creeped out. Low has very creepy elements, which make this song very memerable.
8/10
Have It All
Not an excellant, song, but still a decent piece of music. Have It All starts off with a nice instrumental, and the vocals slide in easily. The chorus will remind older Foo Fighter fans of Everlong. The song is quite a cheerful little tune, and is quite catchy. If you listen to it more than once, you'll have it running through your head for quite some time.
7/10
Times Like These
Times Like These is a good piece of Alternative Rock music. In any other category, it would probably fail, or just linger around and be confused, but the Foo Fighters have got it perfectly fitted as in the alternate category. Along with an excellant new video (not the parallex background one, the one with people throwing things off a bridge), Times Like These becomes a welcome classic.
8/10
Disenchanted Lullaby
A soft (almost) ballad, Disenchented Lullaby seems to be different to the regular Foo Fighters style of music most fans are used to. It has slow soft and compassionate verses, chewed up by a shouted chorus. Yet, it strangely works very well together. A great song.
8/10
Tired Of You
Personally, I really don't like this song. But I'll get past that and give it a fair score.
The start of this song is almost spoken, and is very soft and quiet. It slowly begins to get louder after about 40 seconds, but fails to go any further. The rest of the song is a slow form of a ballad, but is slightly more interesting that that. Despite seeming boring at the dtart, this draws the listener in, and has you strangely hooked until the end.
8/10
Halo
Halo is friendly and sounds quite like a pop song towards the beginning. However, it flows brilliantly into a great chorus which suits the song almost perfectly. Despite the verses doing almost nothing for the song, they keep the listener amused until the chorus hooks you again through the next verse. However, towards the end of the song, things pick it up, and it becomes a genuinly enjoyable listen.
8/10
Lonely As You
The Foo Fighters seem to be going with a theme on this album. Slow, peaceful start, which becomes louder and blows into a loud and brilliant chorus. This song sort of goes along with that theme - the beggining is slow and quite, but after two lines becomes a very catchy Alternative Rock song. This is the part that will hook you for this song; it'll bring a smile to your face and the tune is something new and very catchy. The chorus is almost a completely different style of rock music, and feel like a let down. However, the verses really lift this song to something better than it should have been.
9/10
Overdrive
Overdrive has ever feel to a Punk song. It begins quickly and brightly and continues the same tune pretty much throughout the whole song. The lyrics are bright and pleasing, and keep a mildly happy mood all the way through the song. Overdrive will keep you amused, and is worth the listen.
8/10
Burn Away
Burn Away seems to be another attempt at a Punk song. It begins very Punk-ish, but the verses are slower and more casual than a Punk style song would be. However, it is clear that the Foo Fighters are using the same them here; slow verse which builds up to a loud chanting pre chorus, which then paves the way for the slower chorus, which is loud and brightly sang. Another good effort, but not as good as the final song...
8/10
Come Back
Come Back is a genuinly inspirational effort of Alternative Rock by the Foo Fighters. This starts of slowly, (yet again) and has an excellant guitar tune in the background. Despite seeming slow and boring, this grippingly hooks the listener up to the shouting chorus. As some may know, I'm a big fan of messages in song, and Come Back is filled to the brim with them. After the second chorus, it winds down to a slow acoustic guitar solo, which drags the drums and electrics in as they all wind up and explode into an incredible instumental. The song fades out to Foo Fighters front man, Dave Grohl, chanting 'I will come back' with the music fading out along side him in the background. The Foo Fighters have left the album with a bang, because this is simply amazing. This is currantly my favourite song, and the best song on the album - deserves it, too, because it's incredible.
10/10
The album, One By One, Overall
Overall, One By One wasn't as good as some people expected. It has everything the other Foo Fighter songs have - classic song styles, the same basis of the songs, excellant lyrics and some great instrumentals.
However, One By One is missing something yet adding something, too. The other FF albums where full of what seemed timeless classics, but they have been mimicked so many times they are old and forgotten now. One By One has done the same - it introduces a broad range of styles, all of which fit together perfectly, and combine them to make some classic songs.
One By One is a must have fo any Foo Fighter fans, and for anyone who hasn't heard many FF songs, I definatly reccomend it.
One By One's overall score in percentage: 82%
