Shiguru Wazzat Reviews: By The Way, by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Time for the first music review
This is a review of the Red Hot Chili Peppers newest album, By The Way. I'll do this in a different way - I'll have a short comment and score for each song, then an overall comment and score for the album.
Here are the song reviews:
By The Way
This is one of the best songs on the album. A slow, peaceful start, followed by an explosive and enthralling verse. The chorus is wonderful and meaningful, filled with passion. This is truly an excellent song.
9/10
Universally Speaking
The RHCP newest single, a slower song than By The Way, Universally Speaking is a classic love song. Brilliant, crisp music, and powerful vocals, Universally Speaking gets several hidden messages across if you listen to it carefully.
7/10
This is the Place
Another slow song, deep and bassy. This is the Place is slightly different to other RHCP songs, because it is filled with double meanings and slightly saddening lyrics. If you like meaningful passionate songs, go for this one right away.
8/10
Dosed
Dosed is a true mid 90s love song. Excellent music and classic RHCP, this is the escapade of the RHCP and the woman they love. This is a quiet and peaceful song, and will draw all pop music fans.
8/10
Don't Forget Me
To describe this song in two words: pure genius. Don't Forget Me blends the slow, timeful type of music that RHCP is known for with deep and meaningful lyrics that bring out the best in themselves. An incredible song, but to get the best from it, you have to listen to the words themselves, not just hear the music.
10/10
The Zephyr Song
This is a piece of classic 60s rock. All long time RHCP fans will love this - it's fast and bouncy, and the chorus is smooth. With some great instrumentals and a lot of guitar from the 60s and 70s, this is another must.
8/10
Can't Stop
Can't stop is another excellent effort from the RHCP. It has a slower start, which gradually builds up and explodes in a guitar solo, bringing the song into play. The video is a work of art, and the song itself is incredible. The lyrics are all interwined and sets itself up perfectly. The chorus is more pop like than rock, but is still a great piece of music.
10/10
I Could Die For You
More classic RHCP. This is another slow love song, but with slightly more life to it than the others. Some brilliant verses make up for the short choruses, and if you have something in common with the lyrics to this song (which a lot of people do) you'll love it even more.
7/10
Midnight
This seems to be a little different to other RHCP songs. The RHCP have a very wide range when it comes to style of songs, but this is a blend of a lot of things they've done; it's hard to describe. The song builds up and explodes in the chorus with a powerful shout. Also, this is one of the only songs I've seen with a pre-chorus.
9/10
Throw Away Your Television
This song is slightly odd. Another song with lots of bass. I'm prettysure this song probably has another meaning to it, but I haven't found it somewhere. But, if you get past the unusual theme, you'll understand the brilliance of this song. A lot of people will remember this.
8/10
Cabron
This songs has a slight Spanish feel to it, mostly because of the Spanish style guitar solo at the start, and the guitar that makes the basis of the song. This is a charming little Spanish love song, but with an inexplicable touch to it, and that RHCP charm.
8/10
Tear
A slow and thoughtful song. This song is very thought provoking and will have you trying to deciphor it's meaning for some time. The verses are slow, quiet and peaceful. But as soon as the song reaches the chorus, it becomes loud and sort of pleasing. Tear is a very meaningful song and well worth the listen.
8/10
On Mercury
On Mercury fast and level song. RHCP have gone again for a Spanish feel with this song. The lyrics are very RHCP and will remind you of some older classics by them. The chorus changes tempo and pitch which gives it a very smooth effect.
8/10
Minor Thing
Minor Thing reminds me of By The Way in some ways, although it's almost completely different. The song begins cleverly - the vocals begin immeadiatly start and are very pop song like. It then goes onto a By The Way style rap, and is on and off like that. A very clever blend of two styles.
8/10
Warm Tape
A song with lots of musical echoes. The lyrics are slow and at peace with the music; they embrace each other perfectly. Although the music seems to have a mind of its own whilst the song is playing through, it fits in perfectly with the theme of the song.
8/10
Venice Queen
A slow and slightly saddening song. This draws the listener in from the start with it's fast guitar and peaceful drums. When the lyrics come into play, they tell an enthralling story in the song, something which only a few bands have done successfully. The song is quite slow, until it gets halfway through and becomes a different song entirely. The tempo picks up, the lyrics start something new, and the song continues as a happy, loud and intelligent song.
8/10
The Album Overall:
And now, the overall review of the album, By The Way, itself.
The album is a classic Red Hot Chili Peppers record - it has everything the others do. Yet, it has a new feeling to it. It could be the introduction of new styles previously unexplored by RHCP, or it could be that By The Way is quite simply one of the best albums they've ever done. Seriously. Anyone who has ever heard a single by them or bought an album and liked it, will love this.
It is a blend of at least five different styles of music, some songs have two or even three different styles in them, and they sound absolutly incredible. This album can be described in many ways. 'A work of art', 'genius', 'a classic', 'the years best rock record' are how some magazines and websites have described them. I have never read or heard a bad comment about this album, that's just how good it is. My comment? Easy - excellant. It's as simple as that. This was called the best rock record of 2002, and is still one the favourite albums I own. I completely recomend to anyone at all.
