I just saw this today and I am confused as hell. My brother explained most of it, its a good movie if you understand. I was just curious what people's interpretation on the ending scene was. My brother and I both think it could mean a lot of things, but I can't state one idea without any reasoning behind it.

My brother and I both think it could mean a lot of things, but I can't state one idea without any reasoning behind it. Eh. For the record, I absolutely love EoE. The last scene is open-ended and could be interpreted any one of a number of ways. I personally go for the fairly conventional explanation: Asuka was dying, but not dead, when third impact occured, and dissolved into LCL like the rest of humanity. When Shinji rejects Instrumentality, he and Asuka happen to be the first there to will themselves to live, reform their AT-Fields, and return to their previous forms. The rest of humanity can and probably will return as well. Shinji is terrified and confused by the sudden, shocking return to being a singular being with insecurities, pains, and doubts, and attacks Asuka - symbolizing the reasoning behind beginning Instrumentality, the impossibility of understanding others while seperate. Asuka, in stroking his cheek, gives him a sign of acceptance - symbolizing the motive behind Shinji's rejection of the comfortable world of Instrumentality, that humans can find happiness if they overcome their insecurities. This whole psychological part of it with the fear of not being accepted is made much clearer if you've slogged through the last two episodes of the series. Shinji's anger vanishes and he breaks down, accepting his individuality again but overwhelmed by the things that have happened. Asuka's last line could mean quite a few things: maybe she feels disoriented by returning, maybe she hates having to experience individuality again. It's kind of up to interpretation. It seems to me the idea that fits in best with the characters and the alternate view of the ending we get in episodes 25-26.

Another possibility would be (granted that you saw the movie in English, not Japanese) that Asuka's last line, "How Disgusting" means Shinji and Asuka were the only two who decided to reject Instrumentality and the result is they are the only two left on Earth. I say you had to see it in English is because my brother who takes Japanese said that Asuka's line can be translated in other ways, and How disgusting is only one translation.

I stick to japanese originals with english subtitles for the benefit of the much-better voice acting, and yeah, I've seen that line translated at least three different ways; <I feel sick>, <This feeling sucks>, and <How disgusting>. And blakeman said "rock me amadeus". I think my editing gets to his point much more clearly

I wouldn't exactly say it clears everything up, its a little more understandable IMO. The movie is really a remake of episodes 25&26, an alternate ending, so somethings are changed and some aren't.

Bleargh, I think it's too late for me to get into Evangelion. I mean, I'd hgave to buy the DVD boxed set and then the movie and the Death and Rebirth and then EoE. I mean, I'm not mad eof many. I'll stick to Excel Saga, mainly becase it hasn't released 100+ episodes staeside yet

Not that it helps too much, but you don't really have to buy Death&Rebirth cause EoE has Death&Rebirth in it. In Japan, Death&Rebirth was just a teaser and then it was EoE. If you ever have that extra money to spend, you really should get Evangelion its really good. I saw the first episode of Excel Saga, it was really funny.

I understand your Pain mataku, Eva can be painful to pick up when it's so far into it. I was lucky to have the series on TV, but If I ever missed an Episode the next could be confusing. And seeing the Death of Eva cleared up some issues on the eps I missed. Now I'm patiently waiting for Sci-Fi to get a contact deal with another anime series. ;D

I saw this post when I was bored, and although there hasn't been a post since January, I would like to say a few things:
Anyone who has the DVD version, and has watched the film with commentary will already know this:
I can't be ARSED doing quotes, so I'll put it in short - The whole film was filled with biblical references - Adam and Eve. (I can never remember Evangelion charcters names) The part where (?) Rey becomes really big and falls back, and someone grows out of here - this is the whole adam and eve thing. The third impact is the world dying and getting reset .. a bit like a crap computer with windows 9.3 getting booted up to windows xp. Shinji and Orska are the new Adam and Eve on the new world.(and that is to put it very, very, vaguely..)
If you still don't understand, buy the DVD and watch it with commentary ... its very funny and explains a lot of the more confusing scenes.
