Talking about killing is fine with me... as long as no one here is a necrophiliac...
I hate smoking. 'F' it.

Smoking

To say there is no point to smoking is ridiculous. If there was no point, and there are many negative issues relating to it, nobody would bother.
Simple fact - smoking makes you look cool.
Why? I don't know - these days wearing bike chains around your neck is "cool". I myself think that to be a true hard man, you have to be smoking a cigarette in a nonchalant fashion before wasting the good guy's partner, who has one day left until retirement.
But serious, it relieves stress. To many people that's a good thing, wouldn't you agree? There are many people who think it's disgusting. It certainly isn't pleasant to breathe it in. But you live your life and then you die. Why in the hell shouldn't you do it your own way?

I believe it's phrased more accurately that smoking provides little or no positive benefits, yet garners several negative benefits that harm the user and potentially others.
Plus, there are many factors that cause people to begin smoking which override health concerns or so forth- plus, one must remember that the majority of people are probably not going to be aware of them. In addition, addiction to smoking is something users will have to overcome.
"Coolness" does not make something less unhealthful or foolhardy.
There are many other stress-relievers that do not cause several health problems to the user and others, wouldn't you agree? Wouldn't it make more sense to pursue such?
Your argument by itself doesn't float. Relieving stress is good only if it isn't causing more harm than help. Suppose murdering ten children is what I consider a good stress reliever. Does that make my actions good to follow?
And it also can cause lung cancer in others through second-hand smoke.
Because that only extends to how it affects others. Your ability to trash your life ends where it begins to trash mine. As second-hand smoke can cause health problems to people around users, smoking is something that should be regulated in public areas. In private homes, a person can smoke to their heart's content.

It seems we're agreed on one thing - smoking should be allowed in a persons own home. Good. At least you agree to that much.
Smoking is a habit. People get addicted. The smokers I know realise it's dangerous to their health. They know what will happen in the end. They say they should give up. It's not the addiction that stops them, it's the fact that they just don't want to. They like smoking. They enjoy smoking.
You cannot stay at home all the time. Smokers can have social lives too. There are things they need to do. This is where addiction comes in. A smoker needs a cigarette periodically. Do they need to run home to have a cigarette? I believe in the preservation of people's freedoms (not in an over the top American way), and if a smoker doesn't want to quit and is aware of the health issues so be it. I do know that that person smoking will have a negative impact on anyone in the immediate area. In compromise, smoking should be banned in areas of a public location, much like in restaurants. A complete ban across the board is rather too far right wing in my opinion.
Now, to clarify:
"Smoking makes you look cool" - Hollywood's movie icons. I think it is fair to say that most people enjoy watch the odd movie now and again. The ever popular bad-ass hero - always smoked. People love them. Take Clint Eastwood in the Dollar films - he was so cool in those. He wouldn't have had the same image without the cigars. The movie industry tells the impressionable how to act and what to do. Young people do take up smoking because of the idea that smoking is cool.
Smoking does relieve stress. It's better than worry balls, acupuncture, it's what it does. I believe it's simply because the body is receiving the fix it needs. Going on a killing rampage will not de-stress someone if they need nicotine.
I do not know what it is like in America, but in England smoking is generally limited to just pubs, certain areas of restaurants, etc. This is enough for most people - they don't run into second hand smoke unless they wish to, except perhaps when passing a smoker in the street - which will do no harm to them. Only prolonged exposure to second hand smoke will cause harm.
As far as I'm concerned, England's stance on smoking is fine as it is. There is no risk to those who do not wish to smoke, or do not wish to inhale the product second hand. The only ones at risk are children brought up in a house of smokers. There isn't a way to avoid this without seriously jepodising a person's rights. There has to be a balance between the rights of an individual and the well-being of the public.

Yeah but you don't need nicotine unless you start to consume it. Your first cigarette won't relieve stress, it's just when your body needs the nicotine and then by getting it you are releaving yourself. It's a death trap and no one should start.

I agree that it is a death trap. But the amount of propaganda around makes everything think it is so much worse than it is. Smoking DOES dramatically increase the chance of contracting many dangerous/lethal conditions, but it does not mean it WILL. I have many medic friends at Uni, and they're all convinced that smoking will, undoubtedly, kill you. That is a straight out lie. It is possible smoke all of your life and not be affected much more than yellow teeth and fingernails. The oldest recorded woman lived to be 125ish and had been a smoker all her life. She didn't die of smoking related diseases, but instead she just died (that can happen you know ). Evidence shows that the risk of contracting lung cancer etc is MUCH higher, but that does not mean it will happen. This is different for cigar smokers and pipe smokers. I do not know about cigars, but pipes are a lot less likely to cause conditions than cigarettes. Additionally, smoking is good for the economy . The heavy taxation on cigarettes gives the government large earning, and smokers will buy cigarettes because it has an inelastic demand. Should cigarettes be banned, taxation would rise on alcohol, roads and petrol - something I certainly wouldn't wish for. You may hate smoking, but it is doing you some favours to your bank balance.
All I am saying is that you should take facts about smoking objectively and with a pinch of salt.
