Don't know where this goes, so here goes. ^_^
I didn't use the red font so ppl could read easier.
First, back when Hogwarts was started, the four founders (Salazar Slytherin, Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff) made an agreement that one of their descendants must always be around to look after the future of their school. They had discovered the secret of everlasting life, but would not use it, because part of the magic is that it can only be given to one person at a time. Two immortals cannot exist together, otherwise, they might try to kill each other, and that would lead to absurdities.
So the agreement was that if ever their families were on the point of dying out because there were no more descendants, then the last remaining descendant of the last of the four families would learn the secret of everlasting life, so that he or she could look after the school. Another part of the magic was that if two ‘last descendants’ in two different founding families tried to do battle, then neither could kill the other. Voldemort knew the first part of this, but not the second.
We know that Voldemort is the last remaining descendant of Slytherin (CoS), and I am guessing that the other two families have also died out. I am also guessing that James Potter was the last remaining descendant of Gryffindor. Harry went to the Dursleys (on Lily's side) because there were no other relatives. So Voldemort wanted James Potter dead, so that he could have the secret of immortality. This is one of the most fundamental ambitions of Voldemort’s life as described in all the books.
James and Voldemort must have done battle before, and James had always lived, so when Voldemort went to murder the Potters at Godric’s Hollow (Godric, as in Godric Gryffindor), James thought he could hold off Voldemort for long enough to allow Lily to run away with Harry. We know that Lily came from a muggle family, and that the Potters are an old wizarding family. Voldemort also said that he saw no need to kill Lily, so the Gryffindor family must be on James’ side, not Lily's.
However, since James now had a baby - another descendant of Gryffindor - James was no longer protected by the old magic, and died as soon as Voldemort used the Avada Kedavrah curse.
That left Harry as the last of the Gryffindor family, which gave him the old protection. That, combined with his mother’s love, made Voldemort’s Avada Kedavrah curse on Harry rebound on himself. However, because of the old magic, Harry can't kill the Slytherin descendant either, so Voldemort remained alive. Voldemort only stayed alive because of the old magic, not because of anything he learned or did while exploring the dark side, as he told us in book 4.
So I think that in books 5 and 6, we will learn that Rowena Ravenclaw’s family has died out, and the same for Helga Hufflepuff. We will also learn that the Potters are the last remaining family in the Gryffindor dynasty - and that is partly how the Potters got all that wealth. Also, when the Sorting Hat gave Harry the sword in CoS, it was Gryffindor’s own sword, and Dumbledore said, “Only a true Gryffindor….” We all thought he was talking about the school house, but he was really talking about the family history.
Other things will be that the death eaters somehow get caught or killed, so that Voldemort has to rely more and more on Peter Pettigrew to do his dirty work.
At the end of book 6 (or maybe book 5), Voldemort will capture Harry again, take away his wand, and try to kill him again, but discover that he cannot because of the old magic. In the final book, they will have yet another showdown, but this time Voldemort will ask Peter to kill Harry, but Peter will be unable to do that, because Harry once spared him. The confusion will allow Harry to escape, and call Dumbledore, who will finally capture Voldemort and take away his wand. Voldemort will find his end at the hands of the dementors. One of them will be protecting him, but will disobey orders, and give Voldemort the kiss.
However, in that final battle, Voldemort will mortally wound Dumbledore. Harry, now the last of the four founding families, will use the gift of immortal life to heal Dumbledore, and they all live happily ever after. Harry goes on to marry, have lots of kids, (with ME muhaha) and found a new Gryffindor dynasty.
