How much gameplay should go into a game demo? I'm wanting to put out a demo of "Legacy of Kienan," but I don't know how much of the game I should include. Any suggestions?

Yeah, then again, there are those moron reviewers who will complain if a demo has 2 hours . . . I HATE those morons.
Anywho, do whatever you feel is good. I really don't think that 30 minutes is enough to really start to develope a story . . . Because I believe that a good demo ends about 1/3rd of the way through the rising action (for those of you who know what a plot line is) , because that's usually AFTER all of the characters are introduced and when the first conflicts are coming into play.

Well, that's where I'm in a bind. I want the player to be interested and wrapped up in the storyline, so I want to do a fair amount, but I don't want to reveal important connections between the hero and the main bad guy. See the bind I'm in?

The demo should end right after a critic event or right after a critical information about the game story. This way,the player is dying to know what will happen next and he'll surely play the complete version.

you also may want to say it is however long yet include hidden or extra features

Gotcha. ^_^ Now to keep writing, and hope to God I come up with enough of a plotline to catch the players' attention.... Heh...this is terrible. I'm an author, and I'm having problems coming up with a plotline. *slaps her sleeping muses*

What I'm actually trying to do is to think of a way to show a major event in a dream sequence that won't completely reveal the connection between the main character and the main villain. Dream sequences are hard to do without revealing the whole story, y'know?

You can probably have them say...
A Character: "Hero... the truth is... you are... (insert surprise)"
Hero: "....what?!"
End demo.
But then again, I could be wrong...

Nah. You could show things that don't completely give away the surprise, but are extremely subtle hints towards it.
The way Photon put it, the player will expect something cheesy and overdone, like a relative or something.
And you should have your story finished before even starting to work on RM2k, that way you know how everything would best be done. You could always revise the story, hell knows I do it every other time that I work on my main project, but the point remains the same . . . Know what you're working on before you work on it.
You're an author? Write any books/novels/novellas/articles? I used to write articles for a few online websites, myself, a while back . . . Heh. So, have ya? Or is your stuff incompleted/in the works?
