Most of the story background is based around early Judaism. Read up on that big theory posted way back when.

Keep in mind many of SquareEnix's games are influenced by folkore/legends of some kind. Old Hebrew stories are used less than Greek, Celtic, or Roman ones, but are no less interesting when used.
