As a bare minimum, it is recommended that you keep AT LEAST 1/5th of your harddrive free so that there is plenty of temporary memory open.
So unless you have a 2gig harddrive, you should free up a TON of stuff.

Then have your dad do it . . . Unless you mean that he wants to keep EVERYTHING on there, in which case, if you don't mind my saying, your dad is an idiot when it comes to computers.

Our "family friends" have an old computer. It's like a Pentium I 233mhz, and hell I don't even want to imagine what the FSB speed is. 64mb of EDO ram, and meanwhile they have a CD-Rom, a 2-way cd burner, and a 2-way dvd burner. As if burning CDs half of the time while running that old hunk of junk wouldn't be bad enough, while trying to save a .TXT file, THEY RAN OUT OF SPACE!!!
That's right, 1kb left on the harddrive out of 10gigs!
And verily, did my family go over there, and delete what they said we could, and they were left with a whopping . . . 500mb!!!
Seriously, you've gotta let go. I deleted Star Wars Rebellion cause' I was down to hunting those stupid Imperials throughout the outer rim, which meant long hyperspace times and the AI never lets it's fleets stay in one place for more than one turn (it's f**ked up as hell I tell ya!) . Okay, so I got off topic, but still, the point remains; You don't need or use EVERYTHING on your computer. If you do, then you've got a 500mb harddrive from a 386 or something.

You won't be able to play much in the way of games with WinXP. My brother played Star Wars Galaxies on Win98 at it ran at 30fps at the WORST times. On WinXP it freezes for up to 5 minutes at a time when there it too much going on.
AKA WinXP bites ass.
And BTW: There's a reason most computers use Intel processors . . . Because Intel has had long time deals with MANY computer assemblers. AMD only really has deals with some of the newer ones (Wintergreen Systems for example) that are really lesser-known and practically non-existant in the eyes of the average consumer.
Ever wonder why Intel processors "operate at higher speeds"? It's because they run less operations per clock cycle. Granted that it is 9 for the Athlon XP processor and 6 for the Pentium 4, you would say "hey that's just 3." Now multiply that a few thousand times. And then take into account the fact that the fastest Pentium 4 runs just under double the "speed" (if you just go by mhz) of the fastest AthlonXP. It doesn't balance out. The Athlon still beats the Intel in processor tests hands down in half of the categories and is equal in the other half.
There's a reason that the AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Core processor is a best seller; It's cheap, it's high quality, and it's one of the most highly rated processors in reviews around.
And if you want to run ANY games, then you will need a minimum of a 64mb 2xagp bus video card.
If you need help building a computer, whether it's on a budget or the computer of your dreams, then don't hesitate to ask me on AIM . . . I build compys for people all of the time (well I don't actually build them but I guide them through the buying process and answer any questions they might have) and all of them have turned out GREAT.
BUT . . . There's one problem- The prices for RAM have been increasing QUITE a bit over the past couple of months . . . Hell you can barely get 266mhz 256mb chips for less than $30 any more, even AFTER those 4-month mail in rebates.

I have 80 gb hardrive with about 70-75% free space. mainly cause I uninstall my games that I don't use (the save stays on the computer, so I don't lose my place when I uninstall). If I wasn't sharing my computer with someone else, I'd keep all my games on my comp and still have plenty of space left.
