Demon's Mail and Ninja Gear both absorb Shadow attacks. Demon's Vest halves it.

Amarant rocks. He reminds me of shadow, and I always liked ninja/monk characters.

Vivi is wimpy. Freya kills him with one Jump skill, and Vivi won't hit him.

Not if Vivi had the first move...a Flare would wipe Freya out. She always did have low Magic Defence.

Freya is faster. She wears Tin Armour, her Magic Def increases.

Tin Armour vs. Mace Of Zeus? She wouldn't stand a chance. Don't get me wrong, I like Freya, but Vivi is one hell of a mage. Even if he had lower magic, he could still kill her if he had the first move. Cast Stop, Sleep or Break, then a Flare combo.
If Freya went first, there's a high chance she'd seriously damage Vivi with her Jump attack...but there's always the chance that it won't kill him. Remember, the party's defence is much higher than monster's...you can't guess who would win, judging on how much damage they deal to monsters.
So, logically, there's only one answer to that question. Who would win? Whoever goes first.

This isn't really about who is stronger, but who you find more useful, entertaining, cool, etc.

Best Storywise:
FF9's characters didn't really click for me. I'd seen it all before. The only type of character I haven't seen in an FF is a jokey, unserious type character who may mock the badguy and pretend he's not frightened sort of thing. The best is probably Garnet though seems the character developement. Unfortunatly I thought her secret name "Dagger" was completely stupid seems everyone appears to know what she looks like (They all said she was the most beautiful woman in the lands sort of thing. I mean even a bunch of low-life thieves in a completely different city knew what she looked like) so I don't see how the name is going to stop people from recognising her.
Usefulness wise:
Steiner.
