This is A LOT better than the first one, and thats for definite.
Graphics : 9/10
True 3D mixed in with a bit of cel-shading really works. The graphics are very nice and look great. Everything is smooth, and you can even zoom in with the sniper rifle and see the expression on the guys faces so smooth that you can take Hikarus face right up to the screen and still expect it to look good (In a non sexual way)
And, when catching monkeys, instead of it just zooming into the net, the net will emit light and the camera will rotate round Hikaru. There are multiple ways of catching monkeys too. In the psx version, there was only 3 ways of catching : Jumping, Crouching, and standing. Since Hikaru in Ape Escape 2 swings the net difrently every time, and doesnt turn round when swinging the net behind him, there are a lot of cool looking captures.
Gameplay : 10/10
This is where sony really hit the spot. They've doubled the characters life, not to make it easier, but to make it so that they can put more enemy in the stage and make it funner. Also, falling down a cliff or drowning only loses you 1 cookie (2 life points) whilst in the PSX version, it lost you a life. No healing occurs between stages either.
The gadgets have been made much better too. Remember the RC car? Well, you can now get additional cars that can go faster. The dash hoop? Its now much easier to charge up. The propeller? (Called the sky flyer in this one) Its now much easier to use, and doesnt result in a worn out thumb. Small things like this make the game much better to play. There are also new gadgets. Take the bananarang for example. It acts a normal boomerang, bu tit can release banana aroma that accracts monkeys. To decide if a monkey goes to it or not, there is a new stat on the monkeys called "Stomach Fullness" which can be seen witht he monkey cam on the monkey radar. There are other new gadgets too, but i wont spoil it for you.
Sound : 9/10
Voice acting!!! Characters will now talk all the time, even in the messages in stage. And you'll ove it when you catch a monkey. Instead of the character simply saying "Got ya!", he nows says "Got ya!" and a random phrase, like "Your mine!" and "No problem!". Plus, most of the music is really catchy, like the boss theme.
Final Score : 9/10
Rent or Buy? If you have played Ape Escape for the PSX, and you enjoyed it, buy it. Otherwise, rent.
