I just finished this movie a while ago, and just wanted to open a discussion about it.
I thought it was a very good movie, as good as some Miyazaki films. Though if you don't like sad movies, I wouldn't see it.
Also, I thought some of the imagery in it was a little intese for children, as this is considered a children's movie.

Children's movie? When did that happen? It's an anti-war movie on a rather simple basis, focusing on the indirect result of children's suffering rather than the atrocities and brutality of the actual fighting, but it's still very powerful and moving and most definitely not for young children. Just because it's animated and doesn't have some kind of weird tentacle rape monster doesn't mean it's for kids.

It was some children's film festival in Chicago I think. 1994 Best Animated Children's feature or something. After seeing it, I had the same reaction you did.
I think it was a little less powerful then it could've been for me, I heard a lot about how sad and depressing it was supposed to be, so I guess I sorta prepared my mind. It was still very meaningful though, especially (highlight) the parts with the mother and Setsuko's death
I'm glad that they didn't include much war scenes in it. You see war in a lot of movies today, but I never saw the consequences of it as clearly until I saw this movie.
