I'm sure most of you in the anime section at least know of Evangelion, an anime about giant biomechanical robots fighting Angels. However, only a few of you probably know about RahXephon.
From the fact he has an image of the series' main character as an avatar, PaulC probably knows a bit about it.
I've only recently seen the entire subbed series of RahXephon, and I enjoyed even more than Eva.
While RahXephon had many 'similarities' with Eva, such as the depressed main character, beer drinking guardian figure, main character's parent in a big conspiracy, and others.
The differences, however, made it fun to watch. For example, in Eva, the 'bad guys' were Angels and the theme was Judeo-Christian symbolism.
In RahXephon, the 'bad guys' are Mulians/Murians (based on the 'lost' continent of Mu in the Pacific 'discovered' by a 19th century man named Churchward), and the theme was music.
Also, I enjoyed the RahXephon music better than Eva's.
The plot is more like a cross between giant robots and the Matrix, rather than giant robots and the Kaballah (Jewish book of mysticism) and Revelation.
RahXephon's bad guys, the Mulians/Murians attacked with Dolems/Doremu/D-1's, which looked like something out of the mind of a surrealist sculptor, rather than a standard 'big, ugly alien.'
I liked RahXephon's main characters better than Eva's, *Spoiler* because there was a more happy ending in RahXephon (main character rewriting history for the better) than in Eva (main character goes insane and destroys the world).
Just my opinion. Eva is still a darn good series, though. I'd recommend seeing both before making your own judgments.
