Blood - The last Vampire
As an anime from the team that brought us such great titles such as ‘patlabour’ and ‘Ghost In The Shell’ I was expecting a king of an Anime.
The Anime is set in the mid’ 1960’s, before the Vietnam War in Yokota, Japan. The Vampire like race, know as the ‘chiropterans’ are at large.
Visual: 7 out of 10
The first thing that instantly hit me was the Non-Manga style effects, They were clearly computer animated, that may be a good thing to some people but it wasn’t to my liking. The Movement of the characters is something that really shines. The fight scenes are smooth, energetic and graphically violent. As for the character design, it wasn’t something that was distinct Manga style but the artists were brave enough to try, and I admire them for that.
Every few scenes you notice things, like the reflections off car windows, or the light reflecting beautifully off a sword as it is unsheathed into the sun, and it really brings into comparison how much extra effort was put into this area. It doesn’t just reach the acceptable visual affects mark; it takes it to a new level.
Characters: 4.5 out of 10
I think it’s important for the lead character and at least one other character to have a fully developed background and past. On Blood, you see neither. The Heroin, Saya, is a sword wielding vampire slayer with attitude; she shows no remorse and seems to cut down anyone that might be a vampire. However she does have some compassion, and on the odd occasion sticks her neck on the line for innocent people caught up in the chaos.
But apart from that, we are not filled in on any details of her past or how she feels, a true disappointment.
Audio: 8 out of 10
I couldn’t say enough good things about this area, the sound effects are natural and it’s in the battle sequences where you can really begin to appreciate it’s magnitude.
There’s a lack of music in Blood, however in my opinion it’s for the better. The disastrous J-pop (as some people call it “Cat on fire”) has been replaced by ambiance, a welcome idea to me.
Overall: 59%
All-in-all to me it’s an average Anime, and falls short only because of it’s length (40 Mins!), and undeveloped characters. If this film was 2 hours long(ish), the characters could be a bit more developed and would get one of the highest marks.
Would I advise it to a friend? Yes
