Just curious - in general, which do you perfer, subs or dubs? I tend to like subtitled, simply because a lot of dubs are horribly done (see Evangelion).

Subtitled, without a doubt. I always prefer to watch it in its original format. Counts for foreign films, too.
When it's subtitled, it's translated exactly: you get what the Japanese got. When its dubbed, you get a changed script, and a lot of embarrassingly cheesy, awfully acted actors.

that can say for the old Akira dub ;D
Kaneda: Tetsuo, you're doin it again? Yamagata: That pea-brain!
the new dub was well done, though. not to mention it was close to the original Japanese dialogue, pretty good synchronization with mouth movements, and had some cool things added to the dialog (my favorite being when Kaneda yells out "you could at least give me your name, you cold pregnant dog!")
It depends. Disney has done well on dubbing Miyazaki's films, same with Pioneer's dub of Akira, but most of the time i'd just want it subbed.
The (new) dub of Akira can sometimes get better than the original Japanese dialog.
overall, i'd say subbed but with minor exceptions.

Ok, here's some samples of dubbed mangas and animes (in my video collection) with an accompaning star rating for how good it is.
Akira **** There were a few translation errors, and some of the actors were really crappy, but it didn't really detract from the movie.
Akira (Special Edition) ***** The dubbing is about a billion times better, and the actors are equally better.
Ninja Scroll ***** Owning both, i can honestly say that they are almost exactly the same in terms of translation, and the dub has better sounding voices for the characters.
Evangellion *** *Gags* Ok, it's not that bad, but a few of these voices sound like they belong in hentai!
Castle of Cagliostro ***** I don't see how this could possibly be sold as a dub!
Goodbye Lady Liberty ***** As above, but there are americans in this one.
Cyber City Oedo 808 ***** When you have this much swearing, you really can't subtitle it.
AD Police **** This one has it's problems, but you don't really notice them until you've seen the sub.
Bubblegun Crisis ** I really don't like some of the voices in the dub. This is the collection i recorded off SBS.
Genocypher ***** The voices are absolutely brilliant in this, and the translation is near perfect!
At this point, i feel like going and playing Morrowind....
...meh.

You know what I always wonder? What the Japanese think of Japanese voice-acting .. Because we tend to complain about our English voice-acting, I wonder if they complain about theirs - They probably do.
But either way..
I guess I prefer it subtitled, because it tends to be better and the lip-synching is perfect .. Although there is some VERY good dubbed anime - See Outlaw Star and Arc the Lad.

Subtitled, without a doubt. I always prefer to watch it in its original format. Counts for foreign films, too. hehe, i remember seeing this kung-fu movie where the voices were 0% synchronized with the mouths. that was a huge laugh riot for the people that were over. also, with my favorite line from the Akira dub (you could at least give me your name, you cold biatch!), i remember the original cheesy version: Kaneda: You could at least give me your naaaaaaaame!

Berserk has awesome dubbing. The voice actors actually sound like they enjoy doing their roles!

100% subs. I hate dubs. I saw 2 episodes of DBZ in 9 episodes of DBZ in hebrew, but I suffered. What could I do? I'd never give up on DBZ. So, I download all the episodes from 9-59. What do you say about that? stupid Kid's Channel takes the episodes straight from japan so the names are like this:
Bulma - Buruma Tien - Tinshen, Tinshenan Krillin - Kriri Master Roshi - Kame Sanim (WTF?) Piccolo - Piccoro Goku - Son Goku Gohan - Gohan Chan Yajirobe - Yajiroba Vegita - Mackita
And the worst of all....
Frieza - Paris. PARIS!?

I usually get anime in dvd format, so I watch it dubbed first, so I can figure out whats going on, without juggling reading and watching (its not THAT hard to do both, but still). Then I move into subs after that just because it flows better. Alot of dubbing recently is fairly good (look at Tool's post), so usually its not a big deal if I can only get something dubbed, nor is it a big deal if something is only subed. Awhile back my brother got an End of Evangelion dvd that was imported, and the english subs were so horrible. There was so much engrish and mispellings, it was hard to understand what was going on. Just goes to show you not all subs are better.
Anyway, just to comment, subs are not always exactly translated. There are a lot of cultural connotations that can be lost. The words may not be intended in a certain way, even if the translation is literaly. In my experience, theres no such thing as a perfect translation. You're better off with what you feel most comfterble with. You get the same story either way. (usually, unless the translation is really really horrible with either case)

I actually watch it Japanese, subbed if I get it on DVD. But, if I'm watching an anime feature (rented or borrowed) on VHS dubbed, I usually don't complain. I wouldn't want to waste my money like my family did on horrid DBZ dubs, though. I wonder how much dust those have collected? We're doing much better off with the better format, DVD.

CH, you forgot the annoying noise that people make when they're refreshed afterward. ("Aah!")
Subbed, probably. ESPECIALLY with animes that star teenage girls, as stupid Americans prefer ditzy voices to "cute" ones.
