I mentioned I've been roleplaying for four years in another post, so why not share some wisdom, I say? ;D
I'd just like to point out how a few things are done on "Furcadia," a freeform roleplaying game I moderate. The system we use is very orderly, and I'll throw in a few other bits of random wisdom along the way.
---
1.) If your character has no limits to his/her power, what you're doing is called Persona Roleplaying. Using persona roleplay in a strict roleplay environment will more than likely lead to some angry roleplayers and arguements-a-plenty. Make sure you alert others if you're persona roleplaying.
2.) If your character is classified as a strict roleplaying character but you refuse to take any hits or damage illogically through combat, what you're doing is called Power Gaming. Power gaming has no logical explanation other than the player wanting to anger/show off between the other players. It is frowned upon in all freeform situations.
3.) If you don't like how the roleplay is going, RetCon. Roleplay isn't around to piss you off or stress you out -- if you get into a huge arguement with someone, or if something you do not want to happen to your character occurs (in this circumstances, a RetCon will be in the hands of the other player's kindness), you can RetCon the last action(s) that took place to continue with roleplay in an unusual circumstance of conflict.
4.) The "rules" regarding magic in freeform are hard to define, but here's how experienced players go about the system. Using your good judgement as a player, decide how strong each of your character's spells are. Then, decide on a number of "preps" for each. Casting instant magic spells that obliterate everything is ridiclious; therefore, "preps" are in place, so it will take you a certain number of uninterupted posts to cast a spell. The number of preps is in your hands.
5.) Without other players, your freeform wouldn't exist. Don't be an ass. I can't stress this enough - if you're going to be a prick to everyone through unneeded OOC (out of character) comments and the like, then other players have the right to ignore your character's existance to avoid further conflict, and rightly so. Be nice, boys and girls.
6.) You will obey the CONSENT rule. If you choose to attack another character, or steal a posession, or otherwise affect another character in any way, it is always considered an attempt; even if it's not worded as one. This is where your good judgement as a player comes in to decide what would hit your character, damage your character, affect your character, etcetera. Ultimately, what happens to YOUR character is YOUR choice -- within logical limits.
