I thought I'd ost my 'empire's' progress as well.....
I started the game as the americans on the real world map also. I started to dominate the eastern coast of the U.S before Philadelphia was founded in the mid-west. This was where I met my arch-rivals the French.
They had established themselves on the western U.S seaboard and posed a huge problem. After about five hundred years of war against the French, I stupidly became a republic.
Becoming a republic during wartime caused cicil disobedience in almost every city. However in the end I managed to use my forwards bases of Philadelphia and Chicago to cruch the French from two sides.
After this (100 yr war) I explored southwards, until I found the english were dominating south america. After guarding my country with fortifications in southern mexico, I continued to expand scientifically and culturally. I traded maps with the British and discovered that the French had established cities on the soutern tip of the continent.
However after sending an army down to capture 1 city, the English joined me in my quest to rid the world of the French. But then, when we got them down to one city, the English declared peace with the French.
They soon recaptured their occupied city, so now i have the problem of lauching an invasion of the French cities while being an entire continent away from them.
Oh well....

I started a new game as well. Playing as the English on a large real world map. I somehow got stuck in Australia, which should make for some interesting gameplay. I figure I won't have to worry about other civilizations for awhile, or barbarians since it is such a small landmass to cover, so I might as well rush science ASAP. Luckily I'll be getting man-o-wars later, so naval supremacy won't be a problem either...I hope. I'll keep you guys updated.
